On Tuesday, October 20, Kroger hosts its 2026 Investor Day. CEO Greg Foran and CFO David Kennerley will walk Wall Street through Kroger's strategic priorities and long-term financial outlook. Most suppliers will treat it as investor news and keep scrolling. That is a mistake.

What a retailer tells investors is the plan said out loud. The priorities announced on a stage in October tend to show up in category reviews, promotional asks, and cost negotiations over the months that follow. If you want to know what your Category Manager will be measured on next year, Investor Day is one of the best previews you will get, and it is completely public.

To be clear up front: nobody outside Kroger knows exactly what will be announced. This post is not a prediction. It is a listening guide, built entirely from what Kroger has already said publicly, so you know which themes to watch for and what each one could mean for your brand.

## Where Kroger Stands Going In

The context matters, because it shapes the story Kroger needs to tell. In its second quarter, reported September 11, identical sales without fuel grew just 0.2%. Kroger lowered its full-year identical sales guidance to 0.2% to 0.8%, down from 1% to 2%, while holding its earnings guidance of $5.10 to $5.30 per share.

Read that combination carefully. Sales are soft, profit is protected. Kroger pointed to pharmacy pressure, a pressured consumer, and a handful of one-time items as drags on sales, and to cost savings, eCommerce profitability, and media growth as the things holding profit up. When sales are flat and profit targets hold, the pressure has to land somewhere. Suppliers are part of that equation.

There were bright spots, too. Adjusted eCommerce sales grew 20%, the second straight quarter of profitable eCommerce growth. Kroger Precision Marketing profit grew 24%. And Foran called out natural foods and prepared meals as growing well ahead of total sales. We covered the bigger strategic shift in [Who Kroger Is Becoming](https://cincinnaticpgedge.com/who-kroger-is-becoming/?ref=cincinnaticpgedge.com). Investor Day is where we find out how Kroger plans to put numbers behind it.

## Six Things to Listen For

### 1\. How the Value Plan Gets Paid For

Kroger has described a multi-year plan to deliver more value to customers. Value plans cost money, and the question worth listening for is where that money comes from. On the June earnings call, Foran said Kroger was pressing harder in supplier negotiations and weighing how much of suppliers' requested cost increases it would pass on to shoppers.

**Why it matters to you:** If price investment is a headline, expect cost increase requests to face tougher scrutiny and promotional funding asks to grow. Make sure your cost justification is airtight before you need it, not after.

### 2\. Private Label Targets

Expanding private label penetration was named as a priority coming out of the second quarter. Listen for whether Kroger attaches a target or a timeline to it, and which categories get mentioned.

**Why it matters to you:** Private label growth comes from shelf space, and shelf space comes from somewhere. National brands that are me-too items, or that lean on history instead of performance, are the most exposed. We covered this in [Your Brand Has Been on the Shelf Forever. That Won't Save It.](https://cincinnaticpgedge.com/your-brand-has-been-on-the-shelf-forever-that-wont-save-it/?ref=cincinnaticpgedge.com) If your category is named, your next category review story needs to answer one question clearly: what does your item bring that Our Brands cannot?

### 3\. Sourcing and Cost of Goods

Kroger has been open about using direct sourcing and tougher negotiations to optimize the cost of goods. Listen for whether that gets expanded into a formal savings target, and how large it is.

**Why it matters to you:** A stated savings target becomes someone's goal, and that goal gets broken down by department and category. Know your margin story, know your total cost to Kroger, and be ready to talk value, not just price.

### 4\. eCommerce and Retail Media

eCommerce and Kroger Precision Marketing are two of Kroger's clearest growth engines right now. Expect them to get real airtime, and listen for any long-term targets attached to either one.

**Why it matters to you:** If retail media is positioned as a core profit driver, expect it to come up more often in planning conversations. Your digital shelf, from item content to images to search visibility, also matters more as online grows. If your item data is thin, now is the time to fix it.

### 5\. Where the Growth Lives

Natural foods and prepared meals are already outpacing total sales. Listen for which departments and categories Kroger names as growth priorities, and which ones it does not mention at all.

**Why it matters to you:** Growth categories tend to get more space, more attention, and more patience for innovation. Categories left out of the story tend to get managed for productivity. Either way, knowing which side you are on shapes how you pitch. If your brand is in a mature category, see [Is Your Brand Aging Out?](https://www.cincinnaticpgedge.com/is-your-brand-aging-out/)

### 6\. Store Footprint and Giant Eagle

Kroger is closing underperforming stores while opening new ones in growth markets, and it is working toward closing the Giant Eagle acquisition in 2027, pending regulatory review. Listen for updates on new store plans, the closure program, and how Giant Eagle will be integrated.

**Why it matters to you:** Footprint changes affect your distribution, your supply planning, and which divisions deserve the most attention in your market plan. If Giant Eagle integration details come out, that is a long runway to start thinking about now, not in 2027.

## How to Use What You Hear

**Listen for repeated words.** The phrases leadership repeats are the ones that end up in Category Manager goals. If you hear the same words three or four times, write them down.

**Translate to your shelf.** For each major theme, ask one question: does this help my items, hurt them, or not touch them? Be honest with the answer.

**Speak the same language.** When your next category review deck uses the priorities Kroger just shared with investors, you are aligned with what your Category Manager is being asked to deliver. That is a stronger position than pitching your own agenda.

**Talk it through with your broker partner.** They will be hearing how these themes land with Category Managers in real time. Compare notes before you change your plan.

**Do not overreact on day one.** Investor Day sets direction. It rarely changes next week's business. Take a few days to digest before rewriting your plan.
